When it comes to race day, success isn’t just about how strong your legs are; it’s about how prepared you are. The last thing you want is to be standing at the start line, realizing you forgot your hydration pack, your headlamp, or worse…your shoes.
Whether you’re gearing up for your first sprint race or a grueling multi-day expedition, this pre-race checklist will keep you organized, calm, and ready to go. Bookmark it, print it, or tape it to your gear bin; it’s your go-to guide for making sure nothing slips through the cracks.
Admin & Logistics
Before the adrenaline kicks in, lock down the basics:
Confirm registration and waivers are complete
Pick up your bib number and timing chip
Study the race map and mark up your course notes
Review the schedule (start times, cut-offs, transition rules)
Make sure you know where you’re parking and staging
Gear & Equipment
Bike
Your bike is your lifeline—make sure it’s dialed:
Check tires for cuts and set pressure for the terrain
Inspect brakes and make sure pads aren’t worn down
Lube the chain and test your shifting
Charge and mount lights if you’ll be riding at night
Pack your helmet, gloves, and eyewear
Mandatory Gear (if required)
Some races require mandatory gear checks. Common items include:
Compass and map case
Whistle
Space blanket
First aid kit
Headlamp + spare batteries
Nutrition & Hydration
Fuel smart or you’ll bonk hard. Pack more than you think you need:
Hydration pack or bottles filled
Electrolytes or salt tabs
Energy gels, bars, or real food portioned by race leg
Extra snacks in transition
Clothing
Conditions change fast be ready for it:
Race kit (jersey/shorts or base layers)
Weather-appropriate gear (rain jacket, arm/leg warmers, gloves)
Extra socks (you’ll thank yourself later)
Shoes checked and ready
Hat, buff, or sunglasses
Tools & Spares
Mechanical issues are part of the game; be prepared to handle them on the trail:
Multi-tool
Tire levers
Spare tube or tubeless plug kit
Mini pump or CO₂ inflator
Chain quick link & lube
Tech & Safety
Stay safe, stay found:
GPS watch charged and route uploaded (if allowed)
Phone charged and waterproofed
Emergency contacts saved
Tracker/spot device activated (if required)
The Night Before
The race starts with your mindset. Prep early, rest well:
Lay out all gear by discipline
Double-check transition bags
Eat a carb-focused dinner (no new foods!)
Hydrate steadily
Set multiple alarms
Get to bed early
Race Morning
Game time. Keep it simple, keep it sharp:
Light, familiar breakfast
Bathroom break before the start
Sunscreen and anti-chafe applied
Warm-up with a short jog or spin
Head to the line with confidence
Final Thoughts
Races are won and lost in the margins; gear, planning, and preparation matter just as much as strength and endurance. Stick to this checklist, and you’ll show up on race day not just ready to start, but ready to finish strong.
